How to Leave or Mute a Community on Reddit

If you’re no longer interested in a topic, you might want to leave or mute a community on Reddit. Here’s how.

Reddit has thousands of communities where you can learn more about topics and engage with other users. However, there may come a time when you want to leave or mute the community of Reddit.

Perhaps you lose interest in a subject, find a new community, or want to clean up old Reddit communities you no longer engage with. Whatever the reason, leaving or community is straightforward on the desktop, your tablet, or your phone.

We’ll show you the difference between muting or leaving a community and how to do it in this guide.

Should You Leave or Mute a Community on Reddit?

When you leave a community on Reddit, the process is just that. You are no longer part of it; you won’t see notifications, you can’t engage with other members, you are unable to reply to conversations, you can’t upvote, and you cannot post a new thread without rejoining it.

However, like signing out of Reddit, you can still view conversations happening in the community.

If you mute a community, you’ll stay logged into Reddit, but you won’t see notifications from the muted community in your Home or Popular feeds in the app or your desktop.

How to Mute a Community on Reddit on PC or Mac

If you no longer want a community sending you notifications in your feeds, you can mute it from your mobile device or desktop.

To mute a Reddit community from the desktop:

1. Open a browser, go to Reddit.com, and log in if you aren’t already.
2. Open the community you want to mute and click the three-dot button next to About Community.
3. Select the Mute option from the menu that appears.
4. Click the Yes, Mute button when the verification message appears.
5. To revert the choice, click the same three-dot button and select the Unmute option.

How to Mute a Reddit Community on Mobile

You can use the following steps on your phone or tablet to mute a Reddit community.

To mute a Reddit community on mobile:

1. Launch the Reddit app on your mobile device.
2. Open the community you want to mute and tap the three-dot button in the top right corner.
3. Tap the Mute option on the Community actions menu that appears.

How to Leave a Reddit Community on PC or Mac

If you want to do more than simply mute a Reddit community, you can leave it altogether from your desktop or mobile device.

To leave a Reddit community on the desktop:

1. Launch a browser, head to Reddit.com, and sign into your account if you aren’t already.
2. Open the community you want to leave and hover your mouse over the Joined button.
3. Click the button when it changes from Joined to Leave.
4. A notification will appear at the bottom of the page, letting you know you’ve successfully left the community.
5. If you want to return to the community in the future, click the Join button at the top of the page, next to the title.

How to Leave a Reddit Community on Mobile

Of course, you can leave Reddit communities from your phone or tablet using the following steps.

To leave a Reddit community on mobile:

1. Open the Reddit app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
2. Select the home page of the community you want to leave.
3. Tap the Joined button at the top of the screen.
4. Tap the Leave option when the verification message appears.
5. Alternatively, on iOS, you can tap the three-dot button in the top right corner.
6. Select Leave from the resulting menu on your iPhone or iPad.

Using Reddit Effectively

You have options if you no longer want to get alerts and other notifications from Reddit communities. Using the steps above, you can mute or leave a Reddit community from your computer or mobile device.

Whether you’re a Reddit beginner or a seasoned user, there are other ways to get more from Reddit. For example, everyone should enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on Reddit as an extra layer of security to protect their account.
